First Sentence Friday!

It’s about time the Duprees received some good news.  Whatever kind of news it is…meaning I can’t share – at least Mama’s a little happier, although the ever observant Dixie knows something still isn’t quite right.

CHAPTER TWENTY ONE

After the ********* news, Mama smiled more than I believed I’d seen her smile in my entire life, but there was something that still made her look down in the dumps when she thought no one was looking.

Oh there ya go, pull the reader in and then leave ’em dangling all in the same sentence. That’s a nice little technique, especially to open a chapter. You could close the chapter with the inverse. Except, of course, you can’t. Because it’s already been written. And if you postpone publication to run though the LAST sentence of every chapter, I’m driving the Kensington offices and demanding an advance copy!
