First Sentence Friday!

According to some statistics, it is believed 85% of elevators skip the number 13.   There are no number 13’s for hospital rooms.  There is also a real phobia associated to the number 13, called triskaidekaphobia, which is an extreme suspicion of the number.  We have Friday the 13th.  Knowing this, would you get on an elevator or stay in a hospital room if it was designated as Floor 13, or Room 13?

The good news is, there are some things relative to 13 that we don’t want to avoid, or have to fear.  Like this – the first sentence of:

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Uncle Ray strolled into the kitchen the next morning looking like he’d just stepped from the page of some magazine ad.

I have a question that I know you will, at best, answer no more than halfway. Is Ray dressed up this way to make court think he would not need to do what I think he did or is this how he first walked into Dixie’s diary?

Hunka hunka Uncle Ray. Acting more like Uncle Ray Ray, nothing at all like Uncle Raymond. Smart Money says Uncle Ray ain’t around for chapter 14. Livin’ the way he’s livin’ which ain’t livin’ the dream.

You go on home, Uncle Ray, git yo ass outta here while you still gone one. You hear what I’m saying, Uncle? And take that filthy magazine with you.

I like Uncle Ray. I like that he comes on stage looking like he strutted out of a magazine ad cuz is sure makes me wonder how he’s gonna look going off stage.

In a body bag.

I get the feeling Dixie’s Uncle Ray is considerably less lovely than my own was. Although mine looked pretty snazzy too, in a James Dean sort of a way. He died on the 25th, when he was 25. So I guess it’s not always 13 that we need to watch out for…

Uncle Ray, hmm? Is his stylish look a good or bad thing? Why am I asking? You’re not going to tell me! 😉

I’m one of those people who tries to think of it as “Lucky 13”!

(and some tattoo shops do a “Thirteen dollar 13” special on Friday the 13, but you may or may not get what you pay for in those instances)

I’ll never consider Friday the 13th as unlucky ever again. That was the day my hard crime novel went on sub – and yes, rejected – but then DIXIE DUPREE was sent for consideration and we know what happened. 🙂
